Poem 16 (Collection 3)

My heart pounded so loud
that I feared it would be heard.
It raced
and pounded
and beat
restlessly,
incessantly.
I awaited you by the door.
Every knock,
every ring of the doorbell
made me jump up from my chair.
You would be here.
Now.
Anytime.
And I, from your first smile at me,
will know;
yes, I will know that you missed me.

But you never came, my darling.
